Shat the Bed

Games in which a team gave something away: a large lead, a late lead, a short-handed goal at the wrong moment, an overtime that lasted seconds, a power play conceded straight away, or a spell of penalties that cost them a game they were in.

Severity runs from 0 to 100 within each type of moment, so 100 is the worst (or best) on record. Click a column heading to re-sort.

How each moment is found
Large lead lost
Led by 3 or more goals at any point and went on to lose (including in overtime or a shoot-out). Ranked by the size of the lead, then by how the game was lost.
Late lead lost
Led by one goal and was caught in the last 5 minutes of regulation, or held a lead of two or more after 50:00 and was caught later, then lost. Ranked by a two-goal lead first, then by how late the equaliser came.
Short-handed goal at a key moment
Conceded a short-handed goal that tied the game or took the lead in the third period or later, and lost. Ranked by how late it came.
Early overtime goal conceded
Conceded an overtime goal within 60 seconds of the restart. Ranked by speed.
Quick power-play goal conceded
Conceded a power-play goal less than 10 seconds after the penalty was called (gamesheet-era games, where penalty end times are recorded). Ranked by speed.
Penalty meltdown
Lost after conceding at least two power-play goals on one power play, or three or more in the game, having been level, ahead or one goal behind when the first went in. Ranked by goals conceded on a single power play, then in total, then whether a major was involved. Fights and misconducts are not counted. Needs recorded power-play flags, so mostly 2016/17 onwards.
